The Topeng Tua or "old man's dance" is an example of the dance/drama genre of Balinese performance which could easily date back to the origins of time. As in Ancient Greek drama, or the Noh theatre of Japan, to name but two examples, the greatest Balinese performers love the challenge of taking on the "character" of another through the donning of a mask. Our performer tonight is I Made Djimat from Batuan who is famous as one of the directors of the Balinese Gambuh theatre. Gambuh is the oldest style of Balinese performance still extant. Djimat's interpretation of the character of the old man brings all the insight of maturity as well as the expertise derived from a lifetime of dancing.
