The classical dance from the palace, dates back to 1893 when it is reputed to have been witnessed by the Raja of Ketewel when he had "left the body" for a short period of time. On coming back to life he decided to teach this dance to the children in his palace. The Legong Kraton has a number of episodes and takes a long time to perform in the palace or the temple. Here we abridge the performance to about 30 minutes. The performance begins with the appearance of the Condong, dressed in red. This is the serving maid for the princess and she introduces all the dance movements which will be later used by the trio. After this introduction the legong dancers dressed in green come in and the three dance together. Then the servant leaves and the legongs (royal princesses) dance the Lasem sequence. At the end of this sequence one of the legongs leaves while the other dances the part of a wicked prince who wants to marry a legong princess. As he travels to abscond with the legong he meets a bird of ill omen, a black raven, and realises that he and his desires are doomed. The condong returns to dance the bird in the latter part of the performance.
